Ross Hughes was born in Northampton, England, in March 1991.
During primary school, he began to read books about pirates sailing the seven seas, and he was hooked..!
Over the next few years, he enjoyed more fantastical stories and avidly read: The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, David Gemmell's entire works, Trudi Canavan's Black Magician series and Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends. Notably, he fell in love with Pug and Midkemia and read every book by Raymond E. Feist he could get his hands on.
He found a love for history in historical fiction as he got older, branching out to read works by authors such as Simon Scarrow, Conn Iggulden and Valerio Massimo Manfredi. His affection for such stories influenced his future, as he opted to study Ancient History at the University of Birmingham. There, he did his dissertation on the First Crusade, after being inspired by Robyn Young's Brethren trilogy.
After unsuccessfully pursuing the route of traditional publishing, he persisted, and at 21-years-old, he wrote the prologue to what would become the first book in the Convent Series, A Dead Wizard's Dream.
Ross' favourite authors are David Gemmell, Raymond Feist, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Conn Iggulden, Barry Hughart, Joe Abercrombie, Celia Friedman, Lev Grossman and Robyn Young.
On a weekday, Ross can be found at work at his family-run plant nursery. At the weekend, he can be found at home with his adorable Chow Chow, Ellie, partner and fellow author, Whitney, and her feisty feline, Meecho. In Ross' spare time, when he's not reading or writing, he likes to practise martial arts and watch films, especially old Kung Fu films.
One of his favourite quotes of all time is from George R.R. Martin, who said, 'The reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who doesn't read lives only one.'
